On the 1st October 2018, a model casual conversion term was inserted into 84 Modern Awards. When Work Choices was repealed by the Fair Work Act in 2009, casual conversion clauses were only initially included in Modern Awards where casual conversion was already standard practice.
The casual conversion term allows casual employees who meet certain criteria to request to become part time or full time employees after a certain period of service.
What do you need to do?
As of 1st October 2018, employers must give casual employees a copy of the conversion clause in the Modern Award applicable to them within the first 12 months of their first engagement.
Employers who already have casual employees were required to give their casual employees a copy of the relevant conversion clause by 1st January 2019.
